Researchers at the University of Toledo might have discovered a way to diagnose liver disease — even if there are no visible symptoms.
Matam Vijay-Kumar, director of the University of Toledo Microbiome Consortium, helped lead a cross-institutional study that he said was originally meant to see how bile acids operate within the liver.
“This is kind of a serendipitous discovery,” said Mr. Vijay-Kumar, a professor of physiology and pharmacology. “Any disease, if they have symptoms, it is very easy to diagnose and treat. But if it is asymptomatic and silent, then that will be a very dangerous situation. Over a period of time, the liver can go into an untreatable condition.”…
