Target has issued an apology and removed a controversial children’s Halloween costume from its shelves after facing significant backlash. The retailer acknowledged that the product, sold under the name “Kids’ Glows under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume Bodysuit” by Hyde and EEK! Boutique, was offensive and should never have been offered.
The costume, depicted on the website featuring a Black child wearing an orange and black outfit with a mask showing a toothy grin, drew criticism for resembling racist minstrel show caricatures. Many expressed hurt and disappointment, prompting Target to respond publicly.
In a statement released on Monday, Target said, “We got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners.” The company confirmed it had pulled the costume from sale and was investigating how it passed through their review process.
Despite Target’s apology, reactions on social media remained strong. Several users expressed disbelief that such a product was approved, describing it as a “catastrophic corporate failure” and a painful reminder of historical racism.
Target emphasized that removing the costume was only the first step. The company is reviewing its internal procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
This controversy comes shortly after Target reported positive sales growth for the second consecutive quarter. The retailer credited a merchandising overhaul under new CEO Michael Fiddelke, who took the helm in February, with attracting more customers and boosting both in-store and online sales. Additionally, Target benefited from a nearly $1 billion tariff refund following a Supreme Court ruling limiting the former administration’s import tax policies.
