Surge in diapers at recycling center, Rumpke warns of contamination costs

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A measurable surge in diapers showing up at the Rumpke Recycling & Resource Center is creating substantial contamination and leading to the loss of recyclable items, the company said.

Rumpke said it has recently seen a noticeable increase in diapers at the facility and is reminding customers about what can and cannot be recycled. The company said placing the wrong material in a recycling bin can create safety and costly operational problems, including contaminating recyclable materials. Rumpke said some items can damage machines or pose serious hazards to employees.
