At The Pinhook in downtown Durham, people gather to mourn and celebrate the life of Dolly Parton

On August 25th, 2026, the world lost one of its most respected and beloved voices when Dolly Parton passed away at the age of 80.

Dolly meant a lot of things to a lot of people, and that night at the Pinhook in downtown Durham, people gathered to celebrate her life with stories, line dancing, and some karaoke.

“She was my hero. I’m shocked, and I’m sad,” said Pinhook owner Kym Register’s mom Pat. It’s like the day Diana died. It’s a big deal, and I’m so sad.”

Pat has been a fan of Dolly’s since she was a teenager. She was at The Pinhook that night celebrating Dolly with Kym and the rest of the community that had gathered that night. Register let us know that back in the day, their mom was known by some as the Dolly Parton of Durham…
