Somma Pizza owner Mark Somma, longtime Plum restaurateur, dies at 68

Plum’s patriarch of pies, Somma Pizza owner Mark Somma, has died on Aug. 19 after a three-year battle with brain cancer. He was 68.

A self-made entrepreneur from a Highland Park Italian family with six siblings who all cooked, Somma started out working for a Downtown pizza shop seven days a week from open to close. But he’d become far more than a successful pizza maker to his family, friends and the communities he’d help keep full.

“It seemed like everything he touched he became a master at,” longtime friend and co-worker Dennis Scott said. “Whether it was building a car, making a pizza, growing a pepper, raising a kid, being a friend, he just seemed to be great at everything.”…
