A hooded figure walked up to a home on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach shortly after 10 p.m. and repeatedly kicked the front door before running off, leaving behind a damaged frame, crumbling plaster and a bill that could top $2,000. Homeowner Tracy Van De Walker says her husband was already asleep when the pounding started, and the encounter left her badly shaken.
Surveillance video captured the hooded figure approaching the house with several bikes visible in the background, according to the New York Post. Van De Walker estimated the damage at more than $2,000, telling the outlet, “When somebody compromises the security of your house, it’s very disturbing and alarming.” The incident is the latest tied to the so-called door kick challenge, a stunt that has circulated on TikTok and other platforms since 2023.
A Prank TikTok Users Call Ding-Dong Ditch on Steroids
The Post describes the trend as a full-contact version of ding-dong ditch, with participants filming themselves slamming into strangers’ doors and posting the footage for views. Past stunts have gone further than simple kicks, including e-bikes used to ram doors and, in one 2024 case in Coronado, a person who set off a fireworks display before ringing a doorbell. Ocean Beach has now joined a growing list of San Diego County neighborhoods hit by the craze.
The Post’s report notes a similar case in Lemon Grove, where a vandal kicked in a door in October 2025 while another person filmed the act. That incident, along with the Ocean Beach case, shows the prank has repeatedly struck homes across the county rather than a single isolated block.
Felony Exposure Once Damage Crosses $400
California law does not treat this kind of property damage lightly. Under Penal Code Section 594, vandalism causing $400 or more in damage is a wobbler offense that prosecutors can file as a felony carrying up to three years in state prison and $10,000 in fines, according to the Shouse Law Group.
