Waste board targets buildup of Cedar Rapids data center debris

CEDAR RAPIDS — Data center developers would be required to sort their waste before sending it to the Linn County landfill under a resolution under consideration by the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency board.

The board this week unanimously directed staff to prepare the resolution for a formal vote at next month’s meeting. The measure aims to address construction waste coming from the two data center projects underway in southwest Cedar Rapids, although it would apply to all commercial sites.

“I feel strongly that if we have the authority to require this sort of separation on site, that we require these companies to do it. They have the funds to do it themselves … (without) taking away precious space at the landfill,” said Linn County Supervisor Sami Scheetz…
