It’s managed to stay quiet all week, but we’ve made it to another Thursday with storm chances across the DMV. Humidity spiked back up last night, and sunshine has broken out after some morning cloud cover and is pushing us toward the upper 80s. These ingredients will combine with an approaching cold front to spark rain and storms this afternoon and evening, with the majority of us under a Level 2/5 Risk. The main window for severe storms will be from 3-9 PM, and these storms will be widely scattered. Most of us should be fine as we head through the second half of the day, but anyone who does see a severe storm could run into damaging winds, hail, and heavy rain. A spin-up tornado can’t be ruled out across north-central MD, but the rest of the area will be fine.
Some rain will linger into the night past 9 PM, but it will calm down for the most part otherwise. As the cold front slows to a halt, winds will calm, and we’ll start our Friday morning with areas of fog. Everyone north of DC and I-66 will see clearing, and it will stay dry tomorrow, while south of the city there could be some isolated showers and a stray thunderstorm closer to the front across central VA and southern MD. It will still be warm and muggy as we head into the weekend, with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s.
Saturday won’t be all that bad to be outdoors, with humidity dropping a little under partly cloudy skies. Dry conditions will continue into next week with high pressure nudging in, but it won’t be comfortable after Saturday as the heat and humidity ramp up even more. Temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s for the start of September, and stay there through the end of next week. With the humidity, it’s likely we see some triple-digit heat index values at times. The one thing that could cool us down would be our next chance for rain, but some strong storms could join the mix with this, given how hot and humid it will be. Next Wednesday and Thursday will be when it likely gets active again.
