Metro principal suspended after alleged assault of son

A Portland woman who also serves as an elementary school principal in Davidson County has been suspended after being arrested on a charge of domestic assault, with the victim said to be her 13-year-old son.

According to court records, the child’s father contacted Portland police on Aug. 20, 2026, saying that he feared for his son’s safety while in the custody of his ex-wife, Janelle Brooks. The father reportedly claimed that the ex-wife’s new boyfriend had been disciplining Brooks’ two children, but not in a physical way. The child reportedly told police that he was not allowed to sit on furniture in the home and was being made to sleep on the wooden floor with a blanket instead of in his own bed.

The child also reportedly told police that Brooks, 38, had previously choked him and on the day in question had told the child to leave the house without any clothing except underwear. Brooks had also allegedly struck the child on the legs several times with a paddle…
