The Mahwah, New Jersey house where Les Paul built multitrack recording methods and electric guitar breakthroughs has been torn down after a $990,000 sale to private developers. The spot at 78 Deerhaven Road was the workshop and recording studio where Paul conducted experiments that changed how musicians make music today.
Gene Paul, the musician’s son, said nobody warned him about the demolition. He wasn’t allowed inside before wrecking crews arrived. “A few days ago, I saw my father’s home, our family home, gutted. It made me sick,” Gene Paul said in an August 24 Facebook post. “That house was not just where Les Paul lived. It was his workshop. It was his laboratory. It was his journey of dreams.”
