Wave transit fast-tracks new benches after removal of activist-built seating

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wave Transit officials confirmed a push to install new bus stop seating after state and city crews removed dozens of unauthorized, homemade wooden benches placed by a local activist group.

Wave has purchased 19 new shelters and 19 new benches using federal flexibility funds. The items are scheduled to arrive next month and are expected to be installed soon after.

“The first phase is getting really the shelters and benches where they can get installed quickly, so that’s kind of what we call a fast-track approach, and get those out immediately,” said Mark Hairr, executive director of Wave Transit…
