Veteran actress Stockard Channing has made a notable return to the public eye with her first significant red carpet appearance in over two years. At 82, Channing’s career spans decades, highlighted by her iconic portrayal of Rizzo, the head Pink Lady, in the 1978 film adaptation of the Broadway classic Grease, alongside Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.
Beyond Grease, Channing has delivered memorable performances in films like The First Wives Club and Practical Magic, as well as on television. She gained widespread recognition for her role as First Lady Dr.
Abbey Bartlet on NBC’s acclaimed political drama The West Wing. In recent years, however, she has largely stepped back from the Hollywood spotlight.
In an insightful interview with the Sunday Times, Channing shared her reasons for embracing a quieter life in London. “I’m happy being a recluse,” she said, reflecting on the profound impact of losing her longtime partner, producer Dan Gillham, in 2014.
“It had a lag effect. The pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”
She relocated to London in 2019, seeking distance from the relentless attention that comes with fame.
Channing also opened up about her decision not to have children, acknowledging that motherhood was something she had considered. “Children were thought about and, yeah, I think about them now because it’d be great to have someone taking care of me. But hey, children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there,” she remarked candidly.
The actress noted that the changing political climate in the United States influenced her move abroad as well, coinciding roughly with Donald Trump’s election and the country’s evolving political landscape. She reflected on her time on The West Wing, commenting on the nostalgia many feel for a time when political integrity seemed more prevalent.
“People look at The West Wing and go, ‘Wow, wasn’t it great when politicians had an ounce of integrity?’” she observed.
Although she has stepped back from acting, Channing remains active in the industry. She is making her directorial debut with a production of Krapp’s Last Tape at the Edinburgh Festival. Additionally, she will be part of the upcoming events tied to the release of Practical Magic 2 this fall, reuniting with stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Channing will reprise her role as Aunt Frances Owens in the sequel to the beloved 1998 supernatural comedy. The original film centered on sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, played by Bullock and Kidman, who grapple with a family curse linked to the men they love.
Alongside Channing, Dianne Wiest returns as another witch aunt, Bridget “Jet” Owens. The two actresses recently shared a warm reunion, embracing and holding hands during a public appearance.
Practical Magic 2 also welcomes new cast members Joey King and Maisie Williams, portraying Bullock’s character’s daughters, as well as Lee Pace, who plays a scholar of witchcraft and Sally’s love interest. With this blend of returning favorites and fresh faces, the sequel promises to reignite the magic for fans old and new.
