MEDFORD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Middlesex Sherrif’s Office and Medford Police Department are urging residents to be on alert for law enforcement impersonation scams after a Medford resident was targeted on Monday.
The victim reported losing $7,500 after scammers, pretending to be from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, contacted them with a fake arrest warrant. The perpetrators claimed that the victim had failed to report for jury duty and ordered them to pay a fine with Bitcoin, according to authorities
“These government impersonation scams are insidious,” Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian said in a statement. “These perpetrators are using the fear of arrest to convince residents to pay thousands of dollars to avoid incarceration. That’s why it’s imperative we continue efforts alongside our law enforcement partners, councils on aging and others to spread the word about these scams.”…
