A shoplifting stop at a Sacramento-area Walmart turned into a major felony case Friday after deputies say a 34-year-old man caught trying to steal gun slings and firearm lubricant was found with a loaded rifle, narcotics, and three active felony warrants. Daryl Wallace was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail on charges ranging from felon in possession of a firearm to false impersonation.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the case began when Walmart loss prevention staff detained Wallace for allegedly attempting to steal firearm slings and gun lubricant. Deputies with the sheriff’s North Division Problem-Oriented Policing team responded to the store’s parking lot and located a vehicle associated with Wallace, the office said.
Wallace initially gave deputies a false identity, but the attempt backfired. The sheriff’s office said the false name triggered an internal system alert that brought the North Division POP team into the case and confirmed Wallace had three active felony warrants covering vehicle theft, grand theft, and drug offenses.
Vehicle Search Turns Up Rifle and Narcotics
Once deputies searched the vehicle tied to Wallace, they reported finding a loaded rifle, narcotics, and drug paraphernalia inside.
