Iowa driver suffers minor injuries in truck fire south of Brookings

BROOKINGS — A man from Iowa sustained minor injuries after the tractor-trailer he was driving suffered a mechanical failure and went up in flames 8 miles south of Brookings on Interstate 29 on Aug. 25.

The 41-year-old man, from Des Moines, Iowa, was driving a 1999 Peterbilt hauling an empty trailer going southbound on I-29, according to information from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. The incident occurred at mile marker 124, not far from the I-29 bridge over the Big Sioux River.

The man, who was wearing a seat belt, safely exited the vehicle after it entered the west ditch of the southbound lanes and subsequently caught fire. Those lanes were closed for approximately four hours…
