A 40-year-old woman died at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex on Wednesday, just one day after she was booked into the jail on multiple arrest warrants. Rena E. Parra was found unresponsive in her cell shortly after 5:45 p.m., and corrections officers began lifesaving measures before she was pronounced dead, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The Tucson Fire Department was dispatched to the detention complex, and both the PCSD homicide unit and the department’s night detective squad responded to investigate, as reported by KVOA. Parra had been booked into the jail on Tuesday by the Arizona Department of Public Safety on multiple outstanding warrants. Investigators have not deemed her death suspicious, and the Pima County Office of the Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy and is assisting with determining the cause and manner of death, though the investigation remains ongoing.
A Fifth Death in Two Months
Parra’s death marks the fifth inmate fatality reported at the jail within a two-month span, according to a report from KOLD News 13. It comes just three weeks after 39-year-old Jesus M. Tapia was found unresponsive in his cell on August 3, only two days after he was booked into the jail on misdemeanor warrants and shoplifting charges. Twelve News reported that the sheriff’s department did not initially consider Tapia’s death suspicious, pending autopsy results.
In July, 43-year-old inmate David Villavicencio died at the complex shortly after midnight following his arrest on drug-related charges, a case that prompted a homicide unit investigation, per the same station’s reporting. Both Tapia’s and Villavicencio’s deaths came shortly after their initial bookings, echoing the timeline now surrounding Parra’s case. A Facility With a History of Elevated Deaths
The recent cluster follows years of scrutiny over mortality rates at the Pima County jail.
