Myrtle Beach poverty simulation puts local leaders in families’ shoes

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Community members and local leaders stepped into the shoes of families facing financial hardship Friday during a poverty simulation at the Mary C. Canty Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach.

The Waccamaw Economic Opportunity Council hosted the event to give participants a firsthand look at the challenges families can face while trying to make ends meet.

Participants were assigned a family scenario, income, and specific financial circumstances to navigate over a simulated month. They moved between stations while trying to pay bills, maintain housing, put food on the table, secure transportation, and meet other basic needs…
