Using only their imaginations and materials found on Drakes Beach, families and friends formed fleeting works of art Saturday at the 44th annual Point Reyes Sand Sculpture Contest.
Sponsored by the National Park Service, the free event draws hundreds of participants and spectators each year to the Marin County headlands, a scenic spot enhanced by the contest’s sand sculptures of animals, sea creatures, mythological figures and imaginative creations stressing environmental themes.
The rules require contestants to build their entries only from sand and other materials found on Drakes Beach. Participants may not remove plants, rocks or gravel from the cliffs. Sculptures must be formed above the high-tide line and away from the cliffs.
Winners are chosen in categories including children ages 14 and younger, families, adults and People’s Choice, a special prize given to a favorite sculpture chosen by popular vote from all entries across the event…
