All-volunteer group tries to keep free water close at hand for anyone in Wichita

It was the hottest part of the day when Maggie Gilmore pulled into the loading zone along Main Street in front of the former Central Library building by Century II.

She was wearing brown, full-length pants, a blue-and-green patterned shirt and a broad-rimmed blue hat to keep the sun in the cloudless sky off her face. A hot southern breeze made the already warm day seem even hotter.

Without asking for help, she started unloading water from the trunk of her white Honda Accord and carried it to locations on two sides of the building. She had a cooler for some of the water, with the words “Free Water” on one side…
