KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Union Cemetery was buzzing Sunday morning as visitors gathered for the historic grounds’ annual Honey Harvest.
Local beekeepers gave guests an up-close look at the cemetery’s busiest residents, harvesting fresh honey straight from the hives and sharing it with attendees.
While a cemetery may seem like an unusual habitat for honeybees, beekeepers say these historic grounds offer a perfect sanctuary.
“What they’ve realized is the old [cemeteries] are like wildlife paradises, especially for insects,” a local beekeeper explained. “Because it’s so much undisturbed earth that’s been there for so long, you see a lot of native bees and pollinators. The board that runs Union Cemetery does a wonderful job with events, plantings, and keeping the place beautiful.”…
