Tehachapi officials prepare for possible tropical system, recalling 2023 Hilary impacts

With another tropical system possibly heading toward Southern California, Kern County officials and local agencies are urging residents to prepare, drawing comparisons to the impacts of Hurricane Hilary in August 2023.

Tehachapi city staff said the mountain community is ready for intense weather after being among the areas hit hardest by flash floods during Hilary. Tyler Napier said the city learned from that storm and made upgrades afterward.

“We actually learned and felt that our city is able to handle a 100-year storm,” Napier said. “Through that, we made a couple of modifications to one of our sumps to increase the capacity there. Outside of that, everything held really well. As long as we don’t have a bunch of trees fall down or a large wind event, as far as stormwater management we feel very confident that we’re ready to go.”…
