GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 48-unit affordable housing development is planned on the site of the shuttered Stocking school on Grand Rapids’ northwest side.
Stocking Elementary School on 7th Street NW near Alpine Avenue NW closed in 2024. Earlier this year, the Grand Rapids Public Schools Board of Education voted to sell it to the Wisconsin-based Commonwealth Development Corporation of America for $1 million.

Working with the Grand Rapids Housing Commission, Commonwealth plans to transform the 3.5-acre site into a housing community, which would be called “The Foundry at Stocking.” The Foundry would include the existing school building, which would be renovated into a 24-unit apartment building “while maintaining the architectural character and significance of the structure,” according to Grand Rapids Planning Commission agenda documents.
The plans also call for two new structures on the northern section of the site. One new building would contain 14 units and the other would contain 10, for a total of 48 units on the property, according to the plans.

The apartments would be a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units. A quarter of the development (12 units) would be reserved for households earning up to 30% of the Area Median Income, another quarter would be set aside for households earning up to 40% AMI, and the remaining 24 units would be reserved for households earning up to 70% AMI, the plans show…
