NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The man whose case exposed a major flaw in Tennessee’s bail monitoring system has pleaded guilty to capital murder and will spend the rest of his life in prison.
On Friday, Bricen Rivers pleaded guilty to the July 2024 murder of his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Lauren Johansen. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to court records.

Johansen’s death sparked scrutiny of Tennessee’s bail and monitoring systems and ultimately led lawmakers to pass legislation aimed at preventing similar failures.
The case began in 2023 when the Metro Nashville Police Department arrested Rivers for allegedly kidnapping and beating Johansen while on vacation in Nashville. Seven months later, Rivers’ bond was lowered, and he was released from jail under certain conditions, including having to wear a GPS ankle monitor.
