BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – More than two years after safety barriers were installed throughout the East Lake neighborhood, they continue to draw mixed reactions from residents as city leaders report a downward trend in area crime.
The barriers, which the city currently considers permanent, have altered traffic flows in the neighborhood. For some long-time residents, the changes are more than just a minor detour.
“An inconvenience for them people that stay up there coming down the hill – they have to reroute themselves,” one neighbor, who has lived in the area for more than 35 years, said. “Most of the people if they are old, they used to be able to just drive across the street.”…
