ELKHART, Ind. — The world’s only operating New York Central steam locomotive is being relocated from Elkhart to Fort Wayne.
The National New York Central Railroad Museum and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society invite the public to gather September 4 and 5 to say goodbye to the Mohawk, New York Central steam locomotive No. 3001, as its journey continues.
The two-day event at the NYCRM will give visitors a final opportunity to say farewell and photograph the locomotive in its longtime home before it’s gone. No. 3001 will enter the next phase of a multiyear effort that will return it to operation not only as the world’s only operating New York Central steam locomotive, but as a centerpiece for tourism, recreation, education, and trade skill development…
