Judge steps aside in case of Gonzales officer accused of hitting deputy

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – The judge assigned to the case of a Gonzales police corporal accused of knocking an Ascension Parish deputy unconscious has stepped aside because he knows both men.

Gonzales Police Corporal Brent Amy, 40, is scheduled to report to court later this month. However, Judge Steven C. Tureau of the 23rd Judicial District Court signed an order to recuse himself from the case.

In the order, Tureau wrote that he grew up with the deputy and his family, maintains a close relationship with them to this day, and also maintains a friendship with Amy. Tureau noted that these relationships create a “substantial and objective basis that would reasonably be expected to prevent the judge from conducting a fair and impartial hearing.”…
