MADISON, Miss. (WLBT) – Doctors are warning about a rare but deadly brain-eating amoeba and a common water habit that could put people at risk.
Dr. Isabella Wilkerson, a pediatrician at Trust Care Kids in Madison, said people can get the amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, when water is forced into their nasal passages.
That can happen while diving or swimming in freshwater lakes, rivers, canals and ponds.
