A man pulled his car up to an apartment building near 2818 Interstate 35 in San Antonio to meet someone Monday, and within moments he was pistol-whipped and shot twice. Police say a suspect approached his vehicle, pointed a gun at him, and struck him before the confrontation turned into gunfire, leaving the victim with wounds to his torso and arm.
The victim was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition, according to KENS 5. San Antonio police detectives are investigating the incident, but per the station’s report, officers have not released additional information about the suspect or what led to the shooting. The address where the attack unfolded corresponds to Sutton Oaks, a 194-unit affordable housing community on the city’s Near East Side managed by Franklin Apartment Management, according to property records reviewed for this story.
A Complex With a Violent History
This is not the first time gun violence has struck this stretch of the I-35 frontage road. Back in September 2015, a security guard sitting in a parked car at the same Sutton Oaks complex was shot in the torso during an attempted robbery and hospitalized in stable condition, per reporting at the time from MySA. In that earlier case, the suspect dropped his weapon and fled on foot. It remains unknown whether Monday’s shooting involved a similar type of confrontation, since police have not disclosed how the suspect fled the scene, nor have they said what led the victim to arrange a meeting at the location in the first place.
Brooke Army Medical Center, where the victim is recovering, functions as the Department of Defense’s only Level I Trauma Center and treats more than 4,000 military and civilian trauma patients annually across 22 South Texas counties, according to information published by TRICARE. Civilian emergency patients make up roughly 85 percent of the hospital’s trauma admissions, underscoring how often the facility absorbs the fallout from San Antonio’s street violence even though it is a military installation.
Part of a Recent Pattern of Armed Robberies
The Sutton Oaks shooting lands amid a string of violent robberies reported across San Antonio in recent weeks. Just two days earlier, on August 30, police investigated a separate case in which a 17-year-old was pistol-whipped and had a gun fired near his ear during a robbery in a North Side apartment corridor near Interstate 10, according to KABB Fox 29, with four to five suspects fleeing that scene.
