Just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Aurora Police Department responded to a shopping center overrun by roughly 500 young people, most between 14 and 17 years old, after the gathering was organized through social media and tied to an unpermitted sporting event. Officers declared the crowd an unlawful assembly, and some participants ran through nearby businesses, entered surrounding roadways, vandalized property, and stole merchandise before the scene was brought under control.
According to the Aurora Police Dept, smaller groups broke off from the larger crowd and entered surrounding businesses, including a restaurant and a grocery store, while others pushed into nearby roadways. Police say officers ordered the crowd to disperse once the gathering turned into what they described as a public safety hazard. More than 70 Aurora personnel responded to the scene and remained in the area for several hours, a deployment that pulled significant on-duty resources away from calls for service elsewhere in the city.
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said the gathering became a police matter because of the behavior and criminal conduct that unfolded once the crowd assembled. He noted that large crowds can create a false sense of anonymity and can encourage individuals to make decisions they might not make when alone, according to the department’s statement. Investigators are now reviewing available video and other evidence in an effort to identify those responsible for the vandalism, thefts and roadway disruptions.
More Than 10 Percent of the Force Diverted
The Aurora Police Department maintains roughly 700 sworn officers, so redirecting more than 70 personnel to Sunday’s incident pulled over 10 percent of the department’s total sworn workforce away from routine citywide coverage, per Sentinel Colorado.
