(KRON) — A trio of inexperienced hikers who used artificial intelligence to plan their excursion were rescued off Mount Shasta on Monday. According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted in the rescue, the three young men were from Roseville.
They made camp at 8,400 feet on Saturday and then headed off for the summit with daypacks at 3 a.m. Sunday. The men, officials said, summited at 7 p.m. — well after the recommended turnaround time of 12 p.m. — and descended in the dark.

One hour into the descent, they called the sheriff’s dispatch for directions and eventually got lost in Mud Creek Canyon. One of the hikers fell and hurt his knee and the group became stranded overnight.
The next morning, U.S. Forest Service climbing rangers found them and provided medical aid. With the help of search and rescue volunteers, the hikers were guided safely back to the trailhead…
