“Tucson is Pachuco territory.”

It’s not something a historian says or a phrase you’ll find on a map. But it’s known to David Alvarado, director of “American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez.”

His documentary follows the life of the activist, director and playwright who brought the popular slang known as Caló, the Pachucos and Chicano stories from California’s farmworker fields to Broadway and Hollywood. Caló is a Mexican American slang from the 1930s and 1940s. Pachucos were members of a youth subculture known for the Zoot suit, with long jackets and wide-legged pants…
