A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to six years in prison after prosecutors said he let children handle a gun inside his Calumet Heights home while he was on electronic monitoring, leading to the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Dalilah Batey by a 14-year-old boy.
Tyler Wright pleaded guilty to child endangerment causing death and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon before Judge Charles Burns, according to court records. Burns sentenced Wright to five years for child endangerment and one year for the weapons charge, with the sentences to be served consecutively.
Prosecutors said Wright invited three children between 12 and 14 years old to his home in the 9200 block of South Harper Avenue on February 9, 2025. Three more children, including Dalilah, later joined the group. The children told police they were smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol, and prosecutors said Wright gave them cannabis to roll.
