MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – As WMTV works to learn more about the deadly Madison Police Department shooting that killed Corey Ruiz in July 2026, we are also learning more about a previous encounter with police.
Shortly after the July 22, 2026 shooting in which Ruiz died, WMTV got a tip about body camera video existing of a previous arrest. WMTV filed an open records request on July 27, and this week, the station received the body camera footage from the Madison Police Department showing a 2024 arrest of Ruiz.
While MPD does not currently have body-worn cameras, the North District was part of a body camera pilot program back in 2024. The program ended after 90 days…
