Heat forces school closures, remote learning and early dismissals across 8 states

As students returned to school, a sprawling heat dome gripping the Midwest and mid-Atlantic had other plans, causing school districts to close entirely, move to remote learning or cut the school day short.

At least 18 school districts across eight states, were impacted by the heat dome sending temperatures soaring through Labor Day weekend. The disruptions arrived in the opening days of the academic year for many districts, and in several cases, on the first or second day of classes.

Experts warn that as summer temperatures stick around longer into the fall months, these types of learning disruptions could become more frequent…
