A federal jury on Thursday delivered a split verdict in New Orleans’ blockbuster staged wrecks case, convicting a disbarred Jefferson Parish attorney of running the yearslong insurance fraud scheme but deadlocking on murder-conspiracy counts he’d faced for the slaying of a key FBI informant.
Jurors deliberated for more than 30 hours over five days before returning the stunning mixed verdict against disbarred lawyer Sean Alfortish and a codefendant, Leon “Chunky” Parker, who had been accused of pulling the trigger that killed Cornelius Garrison III.
Garrison was a “slammer” who earned almost $200,000 by driving passenger vehicles in the staged collisions scheme before agreeing to cooperate with the FBI. He was shot dead inside his mother’s home in Gentilly four days after his cooperation was confirmed by a federal indictment in September 2020…
