Transitional housing site clears Cedar Rapids planning panel

CEDAR RAPIDS — A rezoning request for a new transitional housing project in southwest Cedar Rapids soared through the City Planning Commission this week, clearing the matter for City Council consideration.

The commission on Thursday voted 5-0 to approve the rezoning request for the former CRST building at 3750 16th Ave. SW. The commission acts as an advisory body for the Cedar Rapids City Council, which has final say over rezoning decisions.

The request comes from the Housing Fund for Linn County, which hopes to transform the site into a transitional housing facility for up to 85 residents. The building was last used by CRST as lodging for truck drivers in training…
