Severe storms brought their full force last night, heavily impacting the DC metro region. That batch has moved on, but while many of us are trying to pick up the pieces from last night, we have another threat of more severe weather today. Early sunshine allowed us to heat back up into the low 90s, with excessive humidity still in place, pushing the heat index into the triple digits. This has set the stage for another complex of storms coming off the Great Lakes to feast on this available energy and bring the threat of damaging wind gusts this afternoon and evening. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for all counties except those along the Chesapeake Bay in MD until 9 PM.
Storms were seen crossing the Allegheny Front as of 2-3 PM, already prompting a few warnings in western MD and WV. These storms will continue to push southeast through the afternoon and evening (4-9 PM) as they increase in coverage and intensity. Unlike last night, these storms will roll through during the busier stretch of the evening rush hour, so if you expect to be out and about while these roll through, stay alert and keep your guard up. Some showers and storms will linger into the night, but thankfully in a weaker state. The front causing all of these storms will finally drop south of us on Saturday, ending the consecutive days of severe weather and the hot temperatures. A few isolated showers may pop up across the Shenandoah Valley, but the rest of the area will stay dry.
It will get even more beautiful for the end of the holiday weekend as Canadian high pressure arrives with even cooler temperatures and little to no humidity. While we enjoy plenty of sunshine, temperatures should only reach a comfortable range in the upper 70s to low 80s on Sunday and Labor Day. Tuesday should also be pleasant, though it will start to get warmer. By Wednesday and next Thursday, we’ll briefly flirt with 90 degrees as a few showers and storms could make a return with an approaching front.
