E-bikes can hit 50 mph. Officials say they don’t belong on the W&OD Trail

The peaceful beauty of a leisurely stroll, or an energetic run or bike ride on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail can be shattered by an e-bike zooming by, and police in Northern Virginia want to prevent a serious injury or worse.

NOVA Parks and Friends of the W&OD Trail are teaming up with police departments in the region to raise awareness about safe uses of electric mobility devices, and describe the types of vehicles that are not allowed on the 45-mile multiuse trail that stretches from Purcellville to Shirlington.

On Friday, officers from Fairfax County Police Department were present on the W&OD Trail in Reston and McLean, offering information and clarifying e-bike regulations to people using the trail…
