A County Durham man has been convicted of manslaughter after fatally pushing his biological father to the ground in a pub beer garden, just hours after discovering their relationship.
Martin Greensmith, 37, was found guilty of causing the death of 61-year-old Steven Shevels on Christmas Eve last year. Although Greensmith admitted to shoving Shevels, he denied manslaughter during the trial.
The incident took place at the Queen’s Head pub in Willington, with police called to the scene around 4:45 p.m. Following the shove, Shevels struck his head on the concrete, leading to fatal injuries. Durham Constabulary confirmed that Greensmith had only learned about his paternity “hours” before the altercation.
Initially, Greensmith helped others try to assist Shevels but left the pub before emergency services arrived. He was arrested the following day at his home. Investigators found that Greensmith had searched his phone for information on “involuntary manslaughter” and legal advice after the incident.
Angela Shevels, Steven’s sister, described the tragedy as an “unprovoked act of violence” that has left a lasting void for the family and friends. Detective Alfie Keane, who led the investigation, emphasized how quickly one moment can change lives forever and extended sympathies to the bereaved.
A family tribute earlier expressed their deep sorrow over Steven Shevels’ untimely passing, highlighting how much he will be missed.
Greensmith is due to be sentenced at Teesside Crown Court on October 21.
