In the early 1970s, Pamelyn Ferdin was already well-known for voicing Lucy Van Pelt in the beloved Peanuts animated specials. However, in 1971, she added another “Lucy” to her resume by guest-starring on the classic ABC sitcom The Brady Bunch.
Ferdin, a prolific child star throughout the 1960s and ’70s, recently reflected on her memorable role as Lucy Winters in the episode titled “Will the Real Jan Brady Please Stand Up?” The plot centers on Jan Brady, played by Eve Plumb, who tries to break free from her older sister Marcia’s shadow by wearing a short, curly black wig to a birthday party. At the party, Jan is introduced as “the new Jan Brady,” and Ferdin’s character laughs at her wig, thinking it’s a joke.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Ferdin, now 67, expressed amazement at how fans still associate her strongly with this single Brady Bunch appearance. “It wasn’t even that big of a role, but for the show’s legion of devoted fans, it has earned me the status of legend,” she wrote.
She also revealed a charming behind-the-scenes detail: her character’s name was a nod to her famous Peanuts role. “The script was written by Sherwood Schwartz’s brother Lloyd, and as a little gift to me, my character was named Lucy in honor of my most famous voice-over character, Lucy Van Pelt,” Ferdin explained.
Ferdin was already acquainted with Eve Plumb from previous casting encounters and had worked with Ann B. Davis, who played Alice on The Brady Bunch, during the 1960s on The John Forsythe Show.
She also addressed a common fan question about whether she was ever considered for one of the Brady children: “No. When The Brady Bunch was casting in 1968, I was under contract for Blondie and unavailable.”
While she enjoyed filming the episode, Ferdin noted that the Brady kids were a tight-knit group and she didn’t quite fit into their circle. Still, she fondly remembers spending time on set, especially with Ann B. Davis, with whom she shared many conversations and school sessions on set.
Looking ahead, Ferdin is working on sharing more of her experiences. She recently announced that she is writing a memoir, promising fans deeper insights into her life as a child star and beyond.
