Tony Diaz goes from 0-10 in high school, to FCS, to memorable 1st game with Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa wide receiver Tony Diaz had 84 receiving yards and a touchdown catch in his first game with the Hawkeyes on Saturday.

“If he’s out there healthy, that’s what he does,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said.

Diaz earned the nickname “Boogeyman” in practice years ago for what he could do against defensive backs. He had two scholarship offers out of high school.

Path to Iowa

Diaz transferred to Iowa after choosing the Hawkeyes over Alabama. He came from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In his freshman season it was a first-year FCS program that did not play any games during its inaugural year, with players only practicing against each other…
