UAB study finds married couples can slow down aging with shared healthy habits

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A new University of Alabama at Birmingham study found that married couples can slow down their aging by sharing healthy habits.

The study followed 107 couples between the ages of 40 and 87 over two years. They found love can reinforce healthy habits, including regular exercise, diet and sleeping well. UAB assistant professor of psychology Stephanie Wilson’s team led the study.

“But it was the couples who had happier relationships but unhealthy behaviors that aged the worst, so that was really a surprise in terms of the larger picture,” Wilson said. “That’s what we kind of want to flag and put out there into the world that we need to be careful when we talk about promoting healthy relationships, that we also need to promote good, healthy behaviors along with that.”…
