There are at least 15 Flock brand automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) that the University of Memphis controls. After identifying that six are within the main campus boundaries and two within the Park Campus boundaries, the other seven were harder to locate.
The eight identified cameras on campus, along with the seven within 1000 feet of UofM campus, have the logo of Flock Safety, a company that sells artificial intelligence-powered ALPRs, drones and cameras to organizations such as police agencies, private companies, schools and homeowner associations.
Flock advertises bringing safety to communities by scanning license plates and saving data of cars that pass by for a week. On Flock’s website, they accredit Flock to locating stolen cars and finding 10,000 missing people across the U.S…
