An 11-year-old boy from St. Louis was airlifted to a children’s hospital after the youth off-road vehicle he was driving overturned on a rural road south of New London Saturday evening. The boy was wearing a seat belt when the crash happened around 7:48 p.m. on Rocky Point Lane, about three miles south of town, and suffered serious injuries.
According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the boy was driving a 2023 Polaris Youth RZR northbound on Rocky Point Lane at the time of the rollover. As KOMU 8 reported, Air Evac transported the boy from the scene to St. Louis Children’s Hospital following the crash. The vehicle itself sustained only minor damage and was driven away from the crash scene, per the patrol’s report.
The Polaris Youth RZR involved is a model the manufacturer designates for operators ages 10 and older, according to Polaris, which also requires direct adult supervision at all times for any driver under 16. The Youth RZR 200 EFI comes factory-equipped with speed-limiting technology capping speed below 16 mph out of the box, adjustable by adults up to 29 mph, along with pin-code start, geofencing, seat belts, side safety nets, and a full rollover cage, the company’s specifications show.
What Missouri Law Says About Kids Behind the Wheel
Missouri law generally bars off-highway vehicles like UTVs and ATVs from operating on public roads, with exceptions for government or agricultural work, licensed drivers within three miles of their primary residence, or vehicles authorized under local municipal or county permits, per Missouri Revised Statutes cited by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. State guidelines referencing the same statute, published by Missouri State Parks, also require that any operator under 16 be under the direct supervision of a licensed adult while riding.
