WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A kitchen appliance failure ignited a small grease fire at a Derby elementary school on Sunday evening.
Around 8 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to Tanglewood Elementary School after the head custodian reported smelling smoke inside the building.

Upon arrival, crews discovered light smoke in the cafeteria, which was traced to a fire in a grease-water separator, according to the Derby Fire Department.
The fire was extinguished, and the separator was removed from the building. Other than light smoke, neither the school nor the cafeteria was damaged.
“We are incredibly grateful for Tanglewood Elementary’s head custodian, Rose, who was working this evening, recognized that something wasn’t right, and acted immediately,” the fire department wrote on Facebook. “Her quick response helped prevent a more serious situation. Thank you Rose!”
