RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Families in Northern Nevada can experience classical music, history, and theatrical storytelling brought to life this weekend in a free community performance.
The Reno Phil is hosting a free family concert, presenting “Tchaikovsky Discovers America” by Classical Kids LIVE! on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The afternoon kicks off with hands-on children’s activities at 3:00 p.m., followed by the main concert at 4:00 p.m.

A Tale of Contrast, Courage, and Classical Music
Based on actual historical events, the theatrical concert tells the story of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s arrival in New York in 1891 for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall and his famous journey to Niagara Falls. Through a surprise encounter with a young American girl named Jennie, the production reveals the composer’s personal side—his life in Russia, his deep love of music, and his secret fear of conducting…
