Pete Davidson has opened up about the emotional impact of losing his father in the September 11 attacks, especially now that he’s a father himself. The former Saturday Night Live star, 33, shared how becoming a dad has given new meaning to his dad’s memory.
Pete and model Elsie Hewitt welcomed their daughter, Scottie, eight months ago-a name chosen in honor of Pete’s late father, Scott Davidson, a firefighter who died in the World Trade Center attacks 25 years ago. Although Pete and Elsie have since separated, they are committed to co-parenting their daughter.
“It was really meaningful that Elsie wanted to name her Scottie,” Pete told the New York Post. “My dad’s name was Scott, but his nickname was Scotty.
When she arrived, we both looked at her and thought, ‘She looks like a Scottie.’ It’s nice to keep that name alive.”
Scott Davidson was just 33 when he lost his life serving with Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights. Now that Pete is the same age, the loss feels especially profound.
“At first, I thought, ‘Oh, he was an old guy. He’s 33,’” Pete reflected.
“But now I have a kid, and the thought of my daughter not having her dad-it’s tough. This year is extra hard but also beautiful because I get to spend it with Scottie.
It’ll be healing and special.”
Pete has noticed a touching connection between his daughter and her grandfather’s memory. During bath time, Scottie often gazes intently at a photo of Scott Davidson nearby. Pete initially thought it was just baby curiosity, but even after moving the photo, Scottie still turns to look at it.
While Pete is uncertain about his beliefs, he feels his father’s presence in some way. He hasn’t yet decided how to share his dad’s story with Scottie, but he’s looking forward to passing down memories. “I have old videos and pictures, and I’m excited to share the classic stories I have of him with her,” he said.
In honor of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Pete will co-host “NYC Still Rising After 25 Years: A 9/11 Comedy Benefit” alongside Jon Stewart at Madison Square Garden on September 10. All proceeds will support organizations aiding 9/11 first responders and their families.
