KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – For a lot of people, Labor Day means a long weekend, but for those gathering at this year’s Labor Day Solidarity Picnic hosted by the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Central Labor Council, it is a chance to celebrate the people behind the work and demonstrate why standing together still matters.
This year’s picnic was held at Tyson Park in Downtown Knoxville. The labor council provided food trucks, live performances, and entertainment for kids as a way to bring colleagues and their families together.

At the picnic, President of the Central Labor Council Beau Hawk spoke about the history of Labor Day and why it is crucial to still honor the holiday. He stated that we often take workplace rights, like an eight-hour workday, for granted but celebrating Labor Day always us to reflect on how far we have come. Hawk said there is still more that we have to work towards for tomorrow.
