An AirTag attached to a carjacking victim’s key fob helped Chicago police track down his stolen Audi after prosecutors say a supposed marijuana deal was used to lure him into the South Side carjacking. Three people have now pleaded guilty and received sentences ranging from six to 12 years, court records show.
Cops responding to a ShotSpotter alert in the 8300 block of South Exchange Avenue on the evening of August 30, 2024, learned that a carjacking had also been reported nearby, according to a CPD report.
Officers found a 37-year-old man who said two people had taken his Audi Q7 at gunpoint in the 8100 block of South Escanaba Avenue. The man then got into another vehicle with a 41-year-old woman and began following the SUV, according to a CPD media statement.
