Scammer impersonating WBR deputy with fake federal subpoenas, sheriffs office warns

BATON ROUGE — The West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam caller claiming to be “Sgt. Willis.”

The scammer is calling residents, claiming they have missed a Federal Grand Jury subpoena and have an outstanding warrant. The caller then demands payment to avoid arrest, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer is using several tactics, such as calling from a 225 area code, leaving voicemails saying “urgent legal matter,” attempting to verify residents’ home address and other personal information, claiming there are issues involving residents’ mail and using an aggressive and intimidating tone…
